Industrial Design Student-Achievers
From reports by Victorino P. Datuin
BS-Industrial Design (ID) students brought recognition to their program and the College in several competitions held earlier this year.

adobo magazine Design Competition
Lynnet Joyce Go’s entry, “Gotcha Bag,” won 3rd place in the bag design category of the adobo Design Competition. She was the only student finalist in the category, competing against representatives from major advertising companies, including Campaigns & Grey, Ace Saatchi and BBDO Guerrero.

The adobo Design Competition is organized by adobo magazine, the Philippines’ premier advertising and brand communications magazine. This year’s competition was conducted in partnership with WWF Philippines and had the theme “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.”
More information on the competition is available online: http://adobodesignawards.com.

Obi.201 Interschool Design Competition
DLS-CSB students bagged the top prizes at the Obi.201 Interschool Design Competition held last March 5, 2009. The competition is held bi-annually and is open to all industrial design schools.
Obi.201 focused on Salvaged Monobloc as a theme and contestants had to submit a salvaged Monobloc chair of any brand and provide a design solution to retain or reinvent its seating function. The competition had two categories: the Main Competition/Salvaged Monobloc and the 30-minute on-the-spot design challenge.
In the main competition, DLS-CSB ID teams bagged 1st and 2nd place. Von Roque and Wesley Dionisio won 1st place, while 2nd place went to Joseph Rastrullo-Gonzalez and Rocky Collado.
In the on-the-spot design challenge, the top prizes also went to ID students: 1st place to Jay Mangussad, 2nd place to Von Roque and 3rd place to Rocky Collado.
The competition was hosted by Mapúa Institute of Technology and honors Oscar “Obi” Mapúa, Jr., who initiated the Industrial Design program in the Philippines.

Cebu-X International Furniture & Furnishings Exhibition Mugna Awards (Student Category)
Mirei Ong won 1st prize and Wesley Dionisio bagged the 3rd prize of the Mugna Awards (Student Category). The Mugna Award is the annual design competition of the Cebu-X International Furniture and Furnishing Exhibition organized by the Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation (CFIF). The 2009 Awards was supervised by Design and Product Development Committee Chair Kenneth Cobonpue.
As a leading industry association of the furniture and furnishings export industry in the Philippines, CFIF has partnered with colleges, including DLS-CSB, for a student design internship program that matches design students with Cebu X exhibitors for design and product development. Students develop design prototypes which are put on exhibit during Cebu X and evaluated by an international panel of judges.
The 2009 Cebu-X was held last March 5 to 8, 2009. DLS-CSB students competed against design students from University of the Philippines (UP) in the Visayas, Cebu College, UP-Diliman and University of San Carlos-College of Architecture and Fine Arts.

DLS-CSB is 1st Runner Up in Microsoft Imagine Cup
With reports from Carmen Luz V. Cueto and Ebenezer L. Uy
After competing with 3,200 teams from different colleges and universities all over the country, DLS-CSB’s Council of Green brought home the 1st Runner Up trophy at this year’s Philippine Finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2009 - Software Design Category.
The 2009 Imagine Cup challenge was to “imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems facing us today.” The objective was for students to create software solutions aligned with one of the eight Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, which span a range of global issues including poverty and hunger alleviation, gender equality, education, and health and environmental sustainability.
Council of Green’s entry is named H.O.P.E.: Humanitarian Overturn of Poverty through Empowerment. It is a web application that allows consumers to purchase farmer’s produce through the help of Local Government Units (LGU’s) without having to transact with middlemen. The team, composed of 3rd year BS-Information Systems (BS-IS) students Riela Antonio, Roberto Galang, Jr., Timothy Co, and Joseph Buluran, with Ebenezer Uy as their official team mentor, is planning to further develop the current system and start a website that will help its target users.
Ateneo de Manila University bagged the top prize while 2nd Runner up went to a team from Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Another Letran team and a team from De La Salle University-Manila’s BS-ICTM complete the final five.
This is the 7th year that Microsoft has held the competition and the 2nd year that DLS-CSB joined the event. Last year’s DLS-CSB contingent finished 2nd runner up in the Philippine Finals and was showcased in the 2008 E-Services Event held at the SM Convention Center.
