Deaf Festival Best of 15 Years

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) went all out for the celebration of the 15th Deaf Festival Week on November 16-21 with the theme “Best of 15 Years.”

The Festival featured activities that aim to boost awareness of the Deaf culture. Sports activities, a fashion show, and several seminars were held during the Festival. Fulbright Scholar Robert Baron gave a talk about Deaf Folklore and discussed how unique and rich the Deaf culture is.

The DLS-CSB Deaf Festival was established by Ms. Pearlie Talens, director of the then School of Special Studies which offered the Certificate in Accounting/Bookkeeping Program for the Deaf. She drew inspiration from Deaf people in the United States who gather together for a huge celebration every year. Deaf student Raphael Domingo was the chairperson of 1st Deaf Festival in 1995.

While this year’s festival was again celebrated along with the other schools for the Deaf in the country, the committees continued to be composed of Deaf students from DLS-CSB. Domingo who is now taking up a degree in Bachelor in Applied Deaf Studies once again spearheaded the Deaf Festival as chairperson.
